What is Love?
Since you have in obedience to the
truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently
love one another from the heart. 1 Peter 1:22 (NASB) If we look at the life of Jesus and reflect upon His interactions with people, we see a love that is action. Jesus loved the people around Him so much that He was not willing to let them continue living the way they were. He identified sin and destruction in their lives, not to tear them down, but so they could be built up again in truth. His love refuses to allow people to stay the same. His love demands change. It is easy to give the Jesus answer and say that we are supposed to love others, but what does that mean? How are we showing the love Jesus showed us to the people around us? I have found myself in situations where I know that someone is headed down a path of destruction. Sometimes they see it but don’t want to change and other times they do not see it at all. My heart aches because I know the pain and consequences that are at the end of the road from experience. I have a choice to make. 1: Be silent and allow them to continue living as they wish to live or 2: Speak up in love and truth. The first one is definitely easier. There is no confrontation involved and I will not have to get involved in the situation. However, it is not what we see Jesus do. The second is messy and hard. It may involve pain, hurt, time and possibly the loss of a friend. But it is the example of love that we are given throughout Scripture. To love is to refuse to allow them to live in sin and destruction. To love is to care enough about the person to speak truth into their lives. My prayer is that the people around me will love me enough to speak truth in love.
