Food for Thought
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of the bread he will live forever. This bread is My flesh which I will give for the life of the world. John 6:51
It is definitely not my nature or my habit, but sometimes life’s
pace gets so fast I simply can’t or don’t work out time for
breakfast and lunch. I know better, and usually there is a price to
pay with energy and mental clarity because the body is deprived. If
blood sugar levels get out of balance too, I get the shakes. When it
goes that far most of us are apt to stop ignoring the signals, but
by then, because it’s fast, even junk food is a temptation. Regular
intake of nutritious foods is much more beneficial, of course. The
results are almost instant as strength and energy begins to return.
The unchangeable law of nature says if the generally healthy body is
fed with a variety of good nutrients, it gets stronger. If it is
deprived of the needed vitamins and minerals received from food, it
will get weaker. Going without food long enough will make the body
weak enough to die. Simple.
The Disciples of Christ were faced time and again with the challenge
of feeding the many, or so they thought. Jesus knew that their
welfare depended not on the bread that was available. He knew God
would produce the loaves required to feed multitudes, and there
would be no shortage - of takers or of food. Few can resist good
bread and all of it’s attributes. Yet how many would casually allow
eternal life to slip by unnoticed because they declined to partake
of Jesus? His concern then and now was for the spiritual appetites
being whetted by what the world offered, such as fortune, fame and
intellectual pursuit. They needed the Bread of Life.
The principle of taking in food for growth and maintenance is the
same physically and spiritually. Feed the spirit of man with the
Bread of Life, and he will get strong and stronger, and can grow to
be all He was created for. Deny the spirit of a man or feed it with
anything other that Jesus, and it will grow weaker and weaker – weak
enough to die. It is the unchangeable law of nature – God’s nature!
Will I give attention to my spiritual health? Will I feast on the
Bread of life? Do I exude the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him
(Christ, the Bread of Life), in every place? 2 Cor 2:14. Does my
family ask me to pass the divine extra virgin olive oil because they
deem the Bread irresistible? Do I feed my spirit with the Word -
Jesus?
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. (John 1:14)
It’s definitely food for thought.
