Rescued

He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. 

2 Samuel 22:20 ESV 

Our eyes locked momentarily. I knew in that instant that he was the one for me! The adorable dog paced energetically. His barks echoed above the other dogs in their chain-link kennels at the pet adoption center.  

My husband and I inquired about the small sand-colored terrier with pointed ears and a tail that waved like a mighty banner. But we left without him. I could not stop thinking about him. Would he still be there the next day? 

Fortunately, he was! He stood out from the older dogs, many of which had physical impairments. This small dog remained available because the center required potential owners to be older, childless, and have no other dogs. This special guy needed someone’s full attention. We qualified! 

My husband and I rescued the little, shivering fur baby and carried him to our car. Once home, we released him to his new backyard, where he frolicked freely. We felt a surge of joy at the sight. 

Psalm 18 parrots 2 Samuel 22, a chapter of David’s song of praise in response to God’s rescue. God delivered David from dangerous enemies, especially from Saul, who wrongfully pursued him. Psalm 18:19 is quoted word-for-word from 2 Samuel 22:20. It is a verse worth remembering since God repeated Himself! 

“Delighted” in 2 Samuel 22:20 refers specifically to God’s covenant love, which is personal and intimate. He treats us as His favorite—not because of anything we have done, but—because of His infinite grace.  

I struggle to feel like God’s favorite. Beloved sister, do you also battle to believe you are God’s favorite? 

When has God, because He delights in you, freed you from unbelief and danger and brought you to a place where you could safely thrive? 

Lord, help me to trust You and Your word. I thank You for taking joy in me and my sisters in Christ. Your rescue is always on time and complete.
