FERVENCY

.... Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.
Luke 8:1-3

Have you ever listed the women who have most influenced your life? Luke’s list makes me wonder why Mary, Joanna, Susanna and the many others who served Jesus during his life were notable in first century AD. Surely these women suffered. I’m not sure if I could have endured an exorcism administered over Mary to cast out seven demons. Who would have the stamina to serve and live in the household of Herod?

Clearly, Christ saw the fervency of Mary Magdalene, Joanna and Susanna because he invited them to join him—the imminent Savior and King of the world— to be servant-leaders during his evangelistic ministry. Reckless abandonment was demonstrated by these chosen men and women when they communicated with Jesus for the first time. Rigid religious standards and laws of the day surely blocked women from the freedom men inherited. These women even offered support out of their own means! But they, along with the twelve disciples, dropped everything and followed him! (Luke 9:23-24)

My heart melts when I list the women of faith God chose for my life.....long ago until now. But fervency has to be kindled—like a fire. The Apostle Paul instructs that we must, through the generations, fan into flame the gift of God. He also encourages us not to be ashamed or shy about sharing the gospel of Christ. (II Timothy 1:5-8)

Brave women, let us help each other grow, mature and endure.
