A Prayer for Leaders

A Prayer for Leaders

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority…

I Timothy 2:1-2

Psalm 15 begins: LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill? (Psalm 15:1). Several years ago, as I read the words “holy hill,” the words “capital hill” came to mind. I continued reading Psalm 15, using it as a prayer for national leaders. Now, when I read Psalm 15, my thoughts and prayers go to those who are in leadership—whether they be political leaders, judges, or even pastors and leaders in churches.

The psalm continues: He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellowman, who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the LORD, who keep his oath even when it hurts, who lends his money without usury and does not accept a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken (Psalm 15:2-5).

How different would our nation be if our political leaders and judges adhered to these principles? How different would our churches be if our leaders lived by these truths? How would my life be different if I upheld these truths daily?

Will you join me in praying for godly leaders?

Lord, we humbly ask for leaders who know You personally and seek Your righteousness. Give us leaders who will boldly speak Your truth and make decisions based on Your truth. We ask for leaders who love their neighbors as themselves, who refuse to slander others, who despise evil, and who desire to see God’s purpose fulfilled in every person. Refine our leaders so that they are men and women of integrity who uphold their word. And Lord, as they stand on Your Word and walk in Your ways, let them never be shaken. We pray this in Your name, Lord Jesus. Amen.
