For My Good

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28

It was a bitter disappointment. My daughter had worked hard and felt like she’d demonstrated necessary skills to advance to the higher-level orchestra. But instead, she saw her closest musician-buddies move ahead, leaving her further back than before.

“It’s OK,” I promised, but my condolences fell flat. I watched her take a deep breath and head out to practice.

But the days following revealed her good fortune! There were complaints about the foul-mouthed conductor in the upper orchestra and music that was so difficult that musicians were discouraged and giving up on preparation. Anna Grace was grateful for the challenging, but doable, music in front of her and a conductor who taught and led with grace and humor. She was thankful for how the Lord covered her, protecting her from a tongue spewing blasphemous, critical words.

How often do I long for things that I feel are due me? When disappointment reigns, can I consider how God might be protecting me from the very things I yearn for? His view is broader and higher and greater. His love for me is so deep that he gave his very life for me. Why wouldn’t he move and direct in ways that cover his treasure and defend His Name?

As her mother, I am breathless at the way the Lord loved my girl so practically and personally. In remembering, I can say: I trust You, I trust You, I trust You with my girl…and with my own hopes, expectations, fears, and disappointments.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5).

For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations  (Psalm 100:5).
