Unseen Wounds

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9

I don’t think I’ll ever have children. I don’t deserve to be a mother.

I looked over at my friend. She dropped her head, tears filling her eyes.

She went on to explain that she had an abortion when she was 15. Her parents took her because they didn’t know what else to do. She certainly didn’t know what to do either.

Her hands shook as she recounted the day. The waiting room. The pain. The medicine she took after to help her forget.

Anytime I’ve discussed abortion since, I recall the trauma in my friend’s eyes. Yes, she’s moved on in many ways. She is a professional woman, active in her church and happily married. But the pain is still there.

Abortion is murder, yes. Modern medicine makes this an undeniable fact. Christians should do everything they can to support life. We should lead the way in educating, adopting and empowering women. We should speak up for the babies who can’t defend themselves.

And we must come around those who have fallen prey to this choice. Often there is deep regret, depression and grief.

Maybe you secretly carry the weight of a past abortion. Would you bring that burden before God, asking for and receiving His forgiveness? Take comfort that your child is in Heaven.

Next, find a support group to help you find healing. If there isn’t one in your area, contact a Christian counselor or confide in a trusted friend. God can heal your unseen wounds. Will you take one small step toward restoration today?

Jesus, thank You that when You died on the cross You died for all my sins, including the sin of abortion. Help me remember that I’m forgiven, and my child is with You.
