Hello! My Name Is: Day 3

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters…God saw all that He had made and it was good…

Genesis 1:2-1:31

Throughout history, people believed that a Supreme Being brought the physical universe into existence and continued to act upon it. In the mid-1800’s, with the introduction of evolutionary theory, a new worldview emerged. It centered around a universe that not only thought itself up, but continued to keep itself running. Today the creation vs. evolution debate is still alive and well.

Generally speaking, it is a waste of time and energy to go into battle on this topic. This is because any argument over origins—no matter which side you are on-- is not a scientific, but a faith-based debate. This is because the scientific method requires that, for an outcome to be valid, it must be observable and repeatable. As an old preacher said, “There was only one Person there when it all begin.”

When was the last time you gave a thoughtful reading to the Creation account? (Genesis 1:2-2:3 is the panoramic event, 2:4-25 is the close-up of the creation of mankind.) It is a logical and meticulously-ordered narrative, not a fairy tale. And, in all fairness, you might ask your evolution-believing friends to give it a thoughtful reading. You never know…

What follows is an excerpt from a recently discovered conversation among the Trinity that occurred at some time in eternity past…

“For most of history, people have believed that We created the world. Those were the good old days! In the mid-1800’s, Charles Darwin published that book on evolution--and It has been downhill for Us ever since.”

Ridiculous? Of course it is. But isn’t that how many view this moment in history?

The apostle Paul lived in a time similar to ours. After debating the most accomplished Greek intellects of his day, Paul summed up his experience in these words:

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing…for the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight... (1 Corinthians 2:6, 3:19).
