Help, I Have a Hole in My Heart!

Ah, Sovereign Lord, You have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.

Jeremiah 32:17

I watched my friend, Virginia, as she greeted friends at Sid’s funeral. He had suffered a stroke and fought a futile battle for life for several months. How difficult it was for a wife to watch as her husband suffered. Now he was gone.

Fortunately this story has a happy ending. Sid is no longer suffering, but is in Heaven enjoying all the blessings promised to God’s children. Still, Virginia has a hole in her heart. How can she recover after fifty- six years of marriage? There is an empty place at the table and no partner beside her. The hole is made even larger with added responsibilities she must tend to. Sid is not there to advise her. Still she must go on.

Virginia has the best mending kit available. She depended on the Lord all the time Sid was sick. Now she will turn to Him to heal her heart.

The God who created the universe is capable of anything. He is the Great Comforter.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3).

Between the verse for today and 2 Corinthians 1:3 we can learn three characteristics of our Heavenly Father that aid Him in mending your heart:

1. Nothing is too hard for Him

2. He is the Great Comforter

3. He is the Father of Compassion

What has caused a hole in your heart? Maybe you, too, have lost a husband through death or divorce. Many of you have mega illnesses in your home. Maybe you are dealing with the death or illness of one or two parents. Financial burdens sometimes eat away so that you feel that you are in a hole as well as having one eating at you each day.

Children can dig a hole in your heart in many ways. I feel that most parents try hard to do the right thing. We all fail. I want to encourage you to remember that God’s first children weren’t perfect. Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and one of their sons killed his brother. Don’t blame yourselves. That only widens the hole.

Call on the name of the Lord. Remember that nothing is too hard for Him. Ask Him for relief. Stay close to Him through prayer so that you feel His comfort.

Dear Father, Thank You for loving us. Comfort your hurting children.
