Squirreled Away

Squirreled Away

How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

Psalm 36:7

While driving home from out of town, I received a text from my husband that said, “There’s a squirrel in a shoebox on the counter. If it’s dead when you get home, throw it into the woods.”

What kind of message is that?

Promptly I called my husband. He had found a baby flying squirrel on the driveway as he was leaving for work. He didn’t think it would survive, but he placed it in a shoebox hoping for the best.

When I returned home, I warily peered into the box. The flying squirrel was still alive. Thank you, Jesus!

We nursed him (or her?) back to health. He quickly adapted to our family. We named him Rocky. Rocky is so tiny. He curls up into a ball under my hand and sleeps.

One day as Rocky slept under my hand, our two dogs curiously hovered around me. They sniffed and pawed trying to get a look--or a taste! The larger dog could easily have gobbled Rocky up in one bite.

Although impending danger loomed on the other side of my hand, Rocky slept peacefully in his spot of safety. He trusted that I would protect him.

Likewise, we can trust God to keep us from danger. You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble…(Psalm 32:7). He invites us to take refuge in the shadow of [His] wings (Psalm 36:7). God’s mighty and gentle hands hold us ever so lovingly and securely. We can relax and sleep soundly, as my flying squirrel does in my hands. I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety (Psalm 4:8).

Father, protect us from all harm and grant us peaceful sleep as we trust in you.
