The Sounds of Silence…in God’s Word

The Sounds of Silence…in God’s Word

“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

Isaiah 55:10-11

While snow may be a dirty word in Texas this year, it’s not really the snow per se. Think how beautiful your backyard looked blanketed in white as the snowflakes drifted down. If only the freezing rain and sleet and hail and temperatures that dove to minus six had not lingered for all those days.

We love our sprinklers, but the best way to provide a healthy water supply is definitely rain and snow. Snow is the gift of God to the perennially drought-plagued Sierra Nevada and Rocky mountains. Not only are fires prevented, but the crops flourish as does the landscape. In years of drought the slopes are brown; with plentiful precipitation the wildflowers are in abundance.

In the beginning, in the perfect world of Eden, before there was a need for rain even, streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground (Genesis 2:8) and God’s garden flourished. God’s water supply did what it was intended to do, in the beginning. It will again, in the end: Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb (Revelation 22:1). In the meantime our gardens put up with the erratic consequences of original sin.

So too our souls in the crazy times we live in. Thankfully the word that goes out from (God’s) mouth rains down His wisdom as He would apportion it for you, for me, for the day. Best I choose to sit in silence and allow it to water the deeply planted roots, causing my soul to bud and flourish. Listen well, ladies. Time in God’s word is invaluable: “My word that goes out from my mouth…will accomplish what I desire.”

“The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8, NLT).
