So Little to Give

So Little to Give

Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted.

John 6:11

Have you ever taken on a project that felt impossible? You don’t know where to start. It feels overwhelming. There are too many steps in the process. Certain things have to happen that are out of your control in order to accomplish it.

I feel that way right now. I feel inadequate without the necessary knowledge, resources, and patience to see this project through.

In the Gospels, at the end of a day of teaching and healing, the disciples asked Jesus to send the people away to get food and lodging in nearby villages. Jesus challenged them by commanding them to feed the 5000 men plus the women and children.

Phillip stressed over how much money it would cost to feed a crowd this size (John 6:7). Andrew found a boy that had five loaves of bread and two fish, but questioned what so little could do to satisfy so many (John 6:8).

Jesus told the disciples to seat the people in groups. He took the bread and fish, thanked God for what they had, and then distributed them to every person, who ate until they were satisfied (John 6:11). Jesus miraculously multiplied it so that there were 12 full baskets gathered after everyone had what they wanted.

What struck me, as I studied this, was that Jesus thanked God for what He knew would not be enough. Whoa!

In contrast, I have focused on the huge mountain and my insufficiency. So, this task has grown bigger and more ominous in my mind.

When we focus on fear, it makes the situation worse, but a focus on faith brings peace and strength.

I need to bring Him what I have (my limited knowledge and my ability to ask lots of questions) and thank Him for it. Then, I need to trust Jesus, who is in control, has a plan, and has promised to do the impossible.
