What Do You Want Me to Do for You?

Jesus stopped and called them, “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. “Lord,” they answered, we want our sight.” Jesus had compassion on them and touch their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.

Matthew 20:32-34

That question, “What do you want me to do for you?”  I had never considered it for myself, but decided to give it a try.

What DID I want Jesus to do for me? I knew I wanted the best for the other people I lifted up in prayer, but what about me? No clue came to mind so I asked him for an answer.

Immediately, the story of Gulliver’s Travels popped into my head. I could see the giant Gulliver tied to the ground by the little Lilliputians’ ropes. He soon realized the ropes, huge sized to the Lilliputians, were but mere threads on him. He could have easily escaped, but he chose not to do because he thought it impolite. Impolite to the very people who wanted to control him for their own good? Eventually he chose stand up and the feeble strings all fell away.

Like Gulliver, I realized I needed to experience freedom from what tied me down. I needed to break the bonds of my past so I could move ahead. I knew without a doubt my answer to the question then. Putting my pride aside, I asked Jesus to deliver me from the trappings of my past. 

All of the hurts and insecurities became powerless when moved into the arms of Jesus. 

The question Jesus asked of the blind men in Matthew relates to us all. He compassionately wants to know what we need him to do in our lives. When the men received their sight, they acknowledged his goodness and followed him. He gives us the opportunity to do the very same thing even today. He is faithful and just.

Jesus, your compassion overwhelms us. Your touch heals. We receive your healing and follow you.
