Jesus in the Waiting – Through the Seasons
My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”
John 14: 2-4 NIV
I was driving along a country road, thinking about what a year it has been. All the challenges, heartaches and pain started to surface in my soul. To redirect my thoughts, I turned up the praise music on the radio and found myself singing along. I noticed the pretty red, gold, and yellow leaves covering the trees. God’s creation in a beautiful array of colors.
The wind blew a few leaves across the hood of the car. It was looking a lot like fall. Spring and fall have always been two of my favorite seasons, when the old begins to make way for the new.
I got a little nostalgic thinking about my life. In a few days I would be facing a birthday milestone – one that meant life was going to look a lot different in the years to come. My life was embarking on a new journey. I really started considering the “dash” - the one between my birthday and death date.
I thought, God am I making you proud in the time you are giving me? Is there more You want me to be doing?
God gives us the seasons of creation as glimpses into our lives. We all go through the dark days of winter that gives way to spring flowers and new life. Summer gives us a chance to jump into a pool and splash around and feel carefree. Fall prepares us for the days when we go through changes that we don’t understand or want.
I imagine the disciples sitting around the table as Jesus prepared them for their season of fall they were going to face when He left them. And the winter of grief that would fill their souls as they wondered how they were going to get along without Jesus.
What season are you facing today? Take a moment to stop, take a deep breath and embrace that season, even if it seems hard at the time. God will give you the strength you need to get through it. Slowly, you will see spring emerge from the ashes, and a tiny bud of a flower will come up from the soil. You will see that God is good and keeps His promises to never leave you, just as He did with the disciples at the last supper.
