A Reverent Imitation

A Reverent Imitation

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ Jesus loved us and gave himself up for us…

Ephesians 5:1 NIV

And let us spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

Hebrews 10:24 NIV

We have all heard the saying, “imitation is the greatest form of flattery.” On a recent trip to the beach, I got to watch that play out.

My daughter and four-year-old grandson went for a walk along the shoreline. On their way back they observed a couple with rakes. The man and woman used their rakes to make beautiful designs in the sand which resulted in one big piece of artwork. I could only describe it as absolutely gorgeous.

As soon as my grandson got back to our site, without a word, he picked up our small shovel and started making his own drawing in the sand. He made big circles with crossed lines and other such things. I stood amazed.

Of course, proud grandma had to go down and talk to the couple. I complemented them on their work and told them what my grandson had done. Immediately, the lady put a big smile on her face and made the comment, “Oh my! We taught an art lesson without even knowing it!”

That got me thinking. What kind of lesson am I teaching without even knowing it?

Do I act like a dearly loved child of God and follow his example? Do my attitudes and actions reflect and imitate him? If so, do they “spur” others on toward his love?

Fortunately, we have God’s Word, the Bible, to show us God’s character and give us an action plan. He provides us with the perfect “example” to imitate.

Father, thank you for allowing us to imitate you. I realize our imitation of you does not “flatter” you, but rather it honors you and shows you our love and respect. Help others see you in us. Let that be the lesson we teach as we live out our days.
