Will You Open the Door?
Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.
Revelation 3:20 NLT
We all like to be invited. It can feel good to know someone thought about you and invited you. The invitation is like a door opening to you so that you can participate in something.
In Scripture, Jesus uses this imagery of a door before you, and He is knocking…Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will comein, and we will share a meal together as friends (Revelation 3:20 NLT).
Jesus can surprise you and invite you into a spiritual opportunity with Him. He is saying when you realize this moment, respond and accept it. It is a spiritual door of opportunity for you specifically. You respond and say yes by accepting the opportunity. This can be an invitation into a relationship with Jesus. Or, if you already have a relationship with Jesus, this invitation can be a Holy Spirit inspired service.
However, in Revelation 3, Jesus is speaking to a church that struggled in their spiritual service. Sadly, this church thought they were doing well, and effectively serving God’s kingdom. But Jesus reveals their service effort was only lukewarm and not worthy. The service was not truly inspired by the Holy Spirit, but was a result of their own ideas.
If you question the motives of your service, ask Jesus for help. Be prepared for some changes in your life. Jesus corrects and disciplines everyone He loves, so be diligent and turn from being indifferent (Revelation 3:19 NLT paraphrased).
I have struggled with a similar problem before. I thought my idea for service would bring God glory. The idea seemed God-honoring. Yet, later I realized the idea brought me more glory than the Lord.
When I asked for Jesus’ help, He took me on a journey of change to correct and discipline me for my good and His glory. I am grateful that I responded to Jesus, and He made changes in me that shaped me into a more surrendered follower today.
If you are questioning your direction, ask Jesus for help and let His peace lead you.
Father, in the quiet of my heart You speak to me, whispering, “Child, I am willing to lead you to true spiritual service; just ask.” Lord, lead me to Holy Spirit inspired service and worship of You so that I overcome and sit victoriously with You. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
