The Doors Jesus Opens
Abandon your foolishness and live, and proceed in the way of understanding.
Proverb 9:6 NASB
Lately, my life has been a full range of emotions and events. First, my dad unexpectedly passed away and moved through the door into eternity. Two weeks later, my granddaughter was born and passed through the door into this world. Our family has truly been living out the circle of life. As I contemplated the events of the past several weeks, of one exiting and one entering, I considered… What makes a productive and useful life between entrance and exit?
Solomon, the writer of Proverbs, ponders something similar…
Abandon your foolishness and live, and proceed in the way of understanding… The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For by me your days will be multiplied, and years of life will be added to you (Proverbs 9:6, 10-11 NASB).
Solomon knows there are always things that waste my time– “foolishness” as he calls it. Selfish things that I can be tempted to do with only a temporary value. Instead, Solomon counsels me to pursue the Lord. Then, I will find wisdom, knowledge, and understanding that will multiply my days and add years of life.
I have learned that this wisdom, knowledge, and teaching of the Holy One, God, will always point me to His Son, Jesus.
This reminds me of Jesus’ teaching…
I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance (John 10:10 CSB).
The message translation says it like this… I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.
As Jesus opens a spiritual door to the real, abundant life, I know things will change. With Jesus, I will no longer waste my time; instead, I will spend my time on things that matter spiritually. When I trust the Lord with this change, I know my days will multiply bringing an abundance, a fullness, to them. Jesus adds years to my life by giving me eternal life that starts now and continues into eternity.
I want Jesus to make the most of my time here on earth and open the door to the abundant life. I hope you do too.
Father, in the quiet of my heart You speak to me whispering, “Child, trust Me to change your life so that it becomes abundant and full of spiritual understanding. This will mean letting go and being obedient to Me.” Lord, help me trust You and live the full, abundant life You promise me. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
