Found Faithful
Men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.
1 Corinthians 4:1-2
The threads of God’s faithfulness have certainly woven themselves into the stories of Joseph and Jacob this week. As evidence of their seeking God’s ways begins to pop up in the mire of self-centeredness, we see faithfulness as a moral of the story. God is totally faithful; we who are His children ought to be found faithful in all we do.
Paul is portraying servants of Christ (1 Corinthians 4:1) as under-rowers, slaves from the galley ships of that time who worked hard to do as the master wanted them to do. In the process of pleasing the master, the faithful servants would be entrusted with the secret things of the master.
As servants of Christ then, and that is who we are, we have been entrusted with those secret (divine) things of God. Oh, not to keep those secret things secret, but to be faithful to pass them on to all we know.
This year and next and in the years to come we are celebrating milestones in our grandchildren’s lives. As they finish high school, college, medical school, they have been entrusted with not only knowledge, but also with living lives faithfully for God. It is a matter of keeping on, keeping on, no matter how circuitous the route. Who’d have thought Joseph’s story would take so many turns.
The commencement speaker at ACU graduation this year had these four words to say to the class of 2026: “Trust God. Work hard.” No matter where you go, nor how rambling the route, God’s got you. You can trust Him; He will always be faithful.
As to you working hard: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men (Colossians 3:23). In so doing you will faithfully pass on your faith to those watching: “Oh, may all who come behind us find us faithful” (Steve Green, 1988).
