Set Free!

Set Free!

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
John 8:32

My friend told me the story about her early Christmas present. Her mother bought a new car for her and her husband. At first I was struck by the generosity of this mother, but the rest of the story intrigued me more.

My friend’s husband pulled the new car into the garage, and when he closed the garage door he heard a strange sound. After investigating, he discovered the garage door had broken. The door was down, and the new car was trapped. They had been waiting several days for workers to come to fix the door. While my friend and I were visiting, she received a text saying, “The car is out.” Workers had managed to raise the door, and the car was set free.

Christmas is about being set free! One day Jesus proclaimed in the synagogue, The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor (Luke 4:18-19).

The Lord Jesus Christ came to earth to set free those trapped in sin and death. He came to set us free from condemnation. He came to set us free from the grip of the enemy who has blinded the minds of men toward truth. Jesus came to set us free from hopelessness and to give us assurance of a glorious eternity with Him.

Jesus came to set us free from that which destroys us, but He also came to free us to become what God created us to be. He set us free to glorify God and increasingly become like Him. He set us free to serve God and find true joy and satisfaction in Him.

Friend, have you been set free? Let’s worship Jesus who alone can set men free!
