Son of God

The angel replied to [Mary], “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”

Luke 1:35 CSB

Israel had a history of great leaders, such as Abraham, Samson, Moses and David. The Jews often reminisced about the days Israel lived under those leaders. They each possessed admirable strengths but they could never match those of the Son of God.

Abraham steadfastly obeyed God but he feared man. Moses courageously led God’s people for forty years, but he was prone to rash behavior. Samson exhibited extraordinary strength in battle, but he had little strength to stand up to Delilah. David had a heart for God, but an eye for another man’s wife.

None of the leaders of Israel were worthy to lead and save God’s people. So God sent His Son to the womb of a young woman. Therefore, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. The Son of God would succeed where others failed.

But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship (Galatians 4:4-5 NIV).

God loved us so much that He sent His Son so we could be a part of His family! Now we—as sons and daughters of God—would receive all that the Son of God had.

As Son of God, Jesus had close fellowship with God. Jesus called Him Father, Abba. Jesus was deeply loved by God. God was very pleased with Jesus. The Son of God had access to His Father at all times. He had an inheritance waiting for Him in heaven.

Will you come and join the family?

Jesus, you gave your whole life to fulfill God’s desire because you loved Him, but also because you loved us. You shared God’s love, God’s grace, your status as Son, and your inheritance with us. Teach us to give so generously.
