The Fine Arts

The Fine Arts

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful. I know that full well.
Psalm 139:14

The year I committed to methodically read through the Bible brought many joyful and new surprises. Don’t be impressed, though— believe me— I am too old to admit that I had never read the Bible all the way through in one year!

My love for the Arts—fine art, writing and music were enhanced as I studied. I grew to value a better understanding about God’s detailed character. The phases of the work to build the tent, the ark, the tabernacle, the lampstand, the altars, and the garments deserve to be read. God’s numbered order of precious metals and stones from the earth, textiles, appointed colors, forms of nature, and even oil from the earth were important. Surely the metalwork artisans, textile artists, embroiderers, engravers, wood carvers, and stone cutters were honored to have been chosen for the work. (Exodus 25-30)

How do we engage, then, with the detailed nature of God now? Maybe we know that a dynamic sunset or the song of a bird makes us connect spiritually, but how can you personally bring yourself into the handiwork of God?

I encourage you to consider yourself a valued and fine creation of God. You are uniquely planned, measured and ordered in time. God chose your color palette. Your form, voice and countenance were specifically planned. You are his beloved work he proudly displays daily to yourself and others.

Lord, thank you for the gift of being able to learn about you and ourselves through your Word. We praise you!
