Hemmed In

For you shall not go out in haste, and you shall not go in flight, for the LORD will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

Isaiah 52:12 ESV

Walking the paved dam between two small lakes, I noticed a family of ducks paddling toward shore. Noticeably, the mother duck led the family while the father duck anchored the end of the line. Several ducklings swam effortlessly between the two.

The parents provide safety but also training and help. When ducklings follow their mother in a straight row, they save energy by reduced wave drag. The mother takes the brunt of the water resistance, allowing the babies to swim without tiring. The father duck is last to make sure none stray or are harmed.

Just as parent ducks in water function as bookends for their offspring, God goes before us and is our rear guard as we journey through circumstances. We are never alone.  Unlike ducks, God guides us forever “that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever (Psalm 48:14).

We understand hems on clothing or how hedges hem in our homes. God knew it would comfort us to know that He hems us in. Psalm 139:5 says, You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. We’re reassured and guarded throughout all seasons of life!

Are you aware of your Father’s presence and protection? Sometimes it takes concentrated time and quiet surroundings to experience Him.

Thank You, heavenly Father, for giving us visual pictures in creation that represent truths about Your care for us. May we praise You continually.
