Always in a Hurry

Always in a Hurry

Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

Matthew 11:28-30 CSB

Scottish missionary Mary Slessor said, "Christ was never in a hurry. There was no rushing forward, no anticipating, no fretting over what might be. Each day’s duties were done as each day brought them, and the rest was left with God."

How does that hit you? I remember reading this and thinking, why can’t I be like that? Truth: Jesus is unlike any other human since He is also God. But I think He wants to teach us something.

Before I retired, I recall that most days, I left the office thinking I should have gotten more done. Often, I took work home in those pre-remote work days!

In retirement, I sleep more hours than I did before, and I spend more time with the Lord in the mornings. Still, I find myself trying to get long to-do lists marked off daily!

Jesus completed His earthly ministry in about three years, yet He never seemed irritated by interruptions or overwhelmed by the many people needing Him. He simply did what was next, what was in front of Him. He taught us that His yoke is easy and His burden light when we let Him carry our concerns and assignments.

He lifted the burden of the law, saying simply, "Follow Me." Salvation through faith is a far better path to God than a rigid adherence to rules. Loving and obeying Him, and loving others, leads to peace and rest.

He cares more about our life assignments than we do. He knows how they are to be done, with appropriate rest along the way!

Lord, as I begin to hurry through this day, trying to get it all done, help me remember how you lived life and served the Kingdom!
