Aroma of Knowledge

Aroma of Knowledge

But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of knowledge of Him everywhere.

2 Corinthians 2:14

When I walk into my Mom’s closet her perfume scent immediately reaches my sense of smell. Her clothing, even after washing, still releases that sweet fragrance. Everytime I open the door it makes me smile because that aroma is my Mom.

When we break down the verse above we see that God is leading us as “captives”. We are held in His custody. In Hebrews 13:5 God speaks truth when He states, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” God holds us because He loves us. He is leading us, we are not wandering around on our own and held in the dark. God is light and in Him there is no darkness.

We also see in this verse that we are a part of a triumphal procession. This is a moment of celebration, rejoicing, dancing, and singing. In Roman history this was a time to show off your military achievements. In this case, Christ is showing us off because He is the final Victory over sin and death. This is our good news to share!

Finally, we see that this good news is like an “aroma of knowledge” that we need to spread all around us. We want the sweet fragrance of God’s saving grace to touch the lives of people around us. Our relationship with Christ and the empowering work of the Holy Spirit gives us boldness to share the news that Jesus died on the cross for our transgressions, but He overcame sin and death when He rose 3 days later from the grave! This is a lovely aroma, a fragrance of knowledge that needs to continue to spread.

Lord, continue to work through me so that I can be the sweet aroma of knowledge that shares Your goodness and grace to those around me.
