The Walk of Life

The Walk of Life

Jesus spoke to them again, ‘I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.’

John 8:12 CSB

Once we take our first steps, we usually don’t think much about how we walk, unless we are hurt. We just get up and go. But what about our spiritual walk? It benefits us to take an assessment periodically.

I watched a movie where a marine was charged with conduct unbecoming a marine. I thought about what might be considered conduct unbecoming of a Christian. Am I walking becomingly or unbecomingly in my daily life?

In John 8:12, Jesus said if we follow Him, we will never walk in darkness because we will have the light of life. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (Ephesians 5:8 CSB).

What does walking in the light look like?

We are to walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4), not the old patterns of life we were freed from.

We are to walk according to the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16), not according to our own selfish desires.

We are to walk by faith and not by what we see (2 Corinthians 5:7).

We are to walk wisely (Ephesians 5:15), not foolishly.

We are to walk vigilantly and clearheaded (1 Peter 5:8).

We are to walk decently, properly, honestly, becomingly (Romans 13:13).

We are to walk in truth (3 John 1:3).

We are to walk in love (Ephesians 5:2).

We are to walk in wisdom (Colossians 4:5).

That is a lot of walking! We cannot do this on our own. We need Jesus to help us. Rather than strive for perfection or get overwhelmed and quit, we can seek for improvement. Our lives [are] gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him (2 Corinthians 3:18 MSG).

Jesus, help us to keep looking at You as we stroll along this beautiful walk of life.
