Shifting Shadows
…the Father of the heavenly lights, … does not change like shifting shadows.
James 1:17b
Millie, my daughter’s dog, chases moving shadows in almost frantic obsession. Her shadow-chasing reminds me of James’ description of God as the Father of heavenly lights who does not change like shifting shadows (James 1:17b). Shadows morph, but God does not. That reminder steadies my heart as change seems to keep me in a constant state of flux and frustration. Throughout life’s transitions, I find myself seeking Jame’s unchangeable God when I need the security of consistency and predictability.
James’ complete thought in verse 17 expands to include even more—the good things of life. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights who does not change like shifting shadows.
God created the gifts of sun, moon, and stars that produce the intrigue of shadows, but He also created all the other good gifts in the world. That realization provides more than stability. It brings joy! Facing each day aware that God has filled it with predictably good things energizes my faith. It also renews my confidence for embracing the changeable world with the steady companionship of my unchangeable God.
Father, thank You for James’ reminder of the goodness and steadiness you bring into my life. Continue to remind me with the simple things, like shadows, of who You are as the Creator and sustainer of all things. Open my eyes to Your wonderful gifts and prompt me to acknowledge You as the source of all good things.
