Becoming More Like Jesus

Becoming More Like Jesus

If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples.

John 8:31 CSB

I love to read the word of God! I especially enjoy the Psalms!

But I admit, Scripture memory has always been a challenge for me. I have tried many memory exercises to help me: index cards taped on the mirror, post it notes in my car, writing it repeatedly on a paper, and singing it aloud. There is value in hiding God’s Word in my heart. The psalmist said, I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you (Psalm 119:11 NLT).

Although I value memorizing Scripture, did you know that it is possible to have knowledge of the truth in Scripture in your head and still live ungodly lives?

I have learned there is a difference in knowing God’s truth in my head versus accepting God’s truth in my heart. When God’s truth moves beyond my head, fills my heart and touches my soul – at this point – I change and become more like Jesus. God’s truth becomes such a part of me, that obedience follows my heart change.

Meditating on God’s Word is part of this transformation; as the psalmist says, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night (Psalm 1:2 CSB).

The Holy Spirit uses this process to bring about heart change…

And he was saying these things, many believed in him. Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:30-32 CSB).

This is how I continue in Jesus’ Word, proving I really am His disciple. It comes from a heart change, not just head knowledge of the truth in the Word of God.

In my past, I experienced the difference of head knowledge versus a heart change from the Holy Spirit. This is part of my testimony of the true transformation Jesus brought into my life.

Father, in the quiet of my heart, You speak to me whispering, “Child, My Spirit and My Word bring true change and freedom.” Lord, help me transform and become more and more like You. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
