The Ripple Effect of Reputation

The Ripple Effect of Reputation

A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.

Proverbs 22:1

My mother taught in a country school with graduating classes of twelve students. She often spoke of how much she enjoyed her students and colleagues. Years after her retirement, students’ reflections of her as their teacher still trickle back to me.

Recently, a longtime family friend visited us. He had served as a staff member for the state school for the blind. He mentioned one of his residents graduated from the same school where my mother taught. He laughed at the student’s reaction when she realized he also knew her favorite teacher, my mother.

I smile in amazement each time these stories pop up. Their reappearance fulfills something Solomon understood: “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold” (Proverbs 22:1). Solomon knew that mother’s reputation would live far beyond her lifespan—just like mine will.

Even though Mother’s monthly paycheck added only minimal silver and gold into her bank account, her impact on the lives of her students and colleagues continues to survive.

Rather than silver and gold, I pray that my children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will seek a godly reputation for their lives. I also pray that memories of my life might render similar joyful tales that my mother’s life left behind!

Father, thank You for the treasured memories that return to me from my mother’s life and legacy. Guide me to live my life in such a way that memories that remain will bring glory to You and will encourage others on their journey to Your throne. In the name of Your Son, Jesus, I pray, amen.
