Loving the Word
How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping your word. I have sought you with all my heart; don’t let me wander from your commands.
Psalm 119:9-10 CSB
This ancient wisdom remains profoundly relevant today.
Have you ever hunted for something a long time before finding it? Did you rejoice and appreciate what you found?
God impressed this upon me during a beach trip when, one year, shells were few on the Gulf Coast shore. Since shelling is my favorite thing to do at the beach, I continued to hunt and hope, thinking a beautiful shell would be in the very next wave. Even though I came away almost empty each time, I continued to look. When I finally find a shell, it makes me want to keep searching for another.
Just as a diligent seeker scours a beach for precious shells, we are called to hunt for truth in God's Word. There are seasons when the search feels barren, yielding little. Yet, in these "dry spells," our perseverance is tested. If we genuinely love God's Word, we'll continue to read, search, and trust He'll reveal truths we desperately need.
Consider Jesus' parables of the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price (Matthew 13:44-46). Both illustrate the immense value of the Kingdom, suggesting true treasures require effort and sacrifice. Unearthing spiritual insights demands a dedicated "hunt." When a passage illuminates our hearts, it's like discovering that priceless pearl—a moment of pure joy compelling us to share.
Beth Moore, a renowned Bible teacher, shared her secret to loving the Word: she prayed for it. If you long for deeper affection for scripture, follow her lead as I did and pray for it! God honors such prayers. Even if you don't "feel" it immediately, continue to engage with His Word. The time spent digging for divine truth will never be regretted. It promises eternal rewards.
Lord, may my love for You and Your Word surpass all other loves. Keep me diligent in searching for your Truth daily.
