What is Life?

Then the LORD formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

Genesis 2:7 ESV

I forgot the wonder and mystery of life until I rocked a newborn, my great grandchild. I recalled my own children kicking and squirming in my tummy and the awe of holding their tiny faces next to mine. Only God can create a living being made in His image. What a marvelous mystery. What a marvelous gift.

Reflecting upon my own life and my presence on this orbiting planet, reminds me that I, too, arrived as a newborn taking my first breath and squinting under the bright light outside my mother’s womb. What a wonder that God chose to create a “me.”

I marvel that the essence of “me” will exist with God for all eternity because of His gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. The finite world around me limits my ability to comprehend such a colossal concept. I must simply return to the wonder of life, my great granddaughter’s and my own, and worship the Creator and Giver of life.

Father, guide me in stewarding each day of this gift of life. May I spend it honoring You in daily activities, in time spent with others, and in the time spent with You. Thank You for creating such a thing as eternity, even if I don’t understand such a magnificent concept. Prompt me to invite others to accept Your marvelous invitation to spend it with You! In the name of Your Son, Jesus, I pray, amen.
