Psalm 119 -- True Delight
I will walk in freedom for I have sought out your precepts. I will speak of your statutes before kings and will not be put to shame, for I delight in your commands because I love them. I will reach out for your commands which I love…
Psalm 119:45-48 NIV
What brings you delight? Can you even say the word “delight” without a getting a smile on your face or in your heart? I feel delight when I see a beautiful sunrise or sunset. Certain people bring me delight. Yes, even a delicious meal can delight me. Of course, spending time with God also proves delightful.
If you are like me, when something delights you, you like to think about it, talk about it, and maybe even show pictures of it. You want others to share in your giddiness and joy.
This passage of scripture in Psalm 119 discusses love and delight of God’s commands. As children we tend to push the boundaries when it comes to the commands of our parents. We view rules in a negative context. We may not see the value and importance of them.
As children of God, we can totally trust his commands. We can believe they are for our good not detriment. As we accept his love for us and grow in our love for him, we can appreciate his instructions so much more. We even grow to love not question them.
If we want to walk in true freedom, our need to know God’s precepts becomes more evident. We truly come to love them and find delight in them. Just as we do with our physical delights, we find God’s spiritual directives having great meaning as well. We want to spend time with them and find no shame in sharing them with others. We want others to share our joy.
What a delight to have such a loving God. You show us Your love by providing the guidelines by which You would have us live. They ring true to Your character. We find delight in them.
