Psalm 119 – Getting the Sparkle Back

Psalm 119 – Getting the Sparkle Back

Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens… Your faithfulness continues through all generations…Your law endures to this day… If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.

Psalm 119:89-92 NIV

A friend of mine told a story about someone who read one verse of Psalm 119 every day. By the end of six months, he read the whole book. Then he started over.

With the holidays coming and all official Bible studies on hiatus, I decided to give it a try. Only -- one verse a day just did not cut it for me -- too much good stuff. Divided into twenty-two sections, each part discusses God’s Word, his commands, and his faithfulness. I determined to read one section a day until I completed the book.

The more I studied, and the deeper I got into David’s heart and God’s. I knew I wanted to remember what I read so I ended up writing each section in a spiral notebook and added my own impressions in a different color ink. I realized each one made up a prayer. Those prayers seemed so relevant to me as I faced a difficult situation. I started praying them aloud as I imagined David doing so long ago.

Nothing magical or instant, but as I studied and prayed, my faith and confidence grew. I could see that I had tried to control a situation not mine to control. I felt God encouraging me to totally give it over to him and let him deal with it.

At the time my friend shared about reading Psalm 119 with me, neither of us knew how much I would need it. God did know though. He knew those scriptures would lead me to his divine intervention.

My friends tell me I have the sparkle back in my eyes. I believe I do thanks to the wisdom of Psalm 119.

God thank you for delivering me from my distress. I delight in Your unchanging eternal Word.
