Psalm 119 -- Blameless vs Perfect
Blessed is the man whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all of their heart.
Psalm 119:1 & 2 NIV
I usually get an earful driving anywhere with my two grandsons in the back seat of my car. The oldest always has to set the youngest straight.
One particular day the oldest discussed his skin. Poor thing, he has had itchy spots for years from an allergy to mold in the tropical climate in which we live. Recently diagnosed with celiacs, a diet change to gluten-free seemed to help the rash decrease a bit. When he finished talking, the youngest made a comment about his own “perfect” skin. Boy, did that get the oldest stirred up. “Your skin is NOT perfect! Only Jesus is perfect!”
While I appreciated my grandson’s enthusiasm, I hesitated to think the Bible referred to Jesus’s skin when it talked about his perfection. Jesus, experienced temptation, but did not fall for Satan’s schemes. Jesus made the right choices in every situation. Jesus loved perfectly. Those truths I could totally agree with my grandson on.
Fallible human, infallible God -- while we may not achieve perfection, Psalm 119:1-7 assures us we can live blameless lives by “walking according to the law of the Lord, seeking him with all of our heart, praising him, and learning from his righteousness.”
Our relationship with him grows and matures as we spend time with him. Obedience to him draws us into a closer more intimate walk. He offers us that kind of relationship knowing we are not perfect. He gives us the opportunity to confess our sin when we mess up.
Perfection? Possible for God, impossible for man. Blameless? Achieved through a relationship with the Most High God.
Father, thank you for Jesus who, though without sin himself, died on the cross for our imperfections, our sin. Help us walk blamelessly in accordance with your Word, your direction, and your character. Thank you for the blessing.
