Light for Living

Light for Living

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.

John 8:12

Each Sunday I check my calendar for the coming week and count the mornings I do not need to set my alarm. Waking up to the natural light of day rather than waking to an alarm ranks near the top of my list of small pleasures.

Jesus referred to himself as the light of the world and as the light of life in John 8:12. “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

The New Living Translation of the Bible defines the “light of life” as “to have the light that leads to life.” The Message Translation translates Jesus’ words in an everyday language, “I provide plenty of light to live in”.

I like The Message’s practical application; “Jesus provides plenty of light to live in.” Jesus, as the “light of life” illuminates my heart, mind, and soul for walking step by step on the illuminated path before me. So, whether I set my alarm or slumber until daylight, Jesus promised to provide plenty of light for my day, my week, my year, and my life—right up until I join Him with my new body on Resurrection Day!

Father, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to provide all the light I need to live my life. Forgive me when I choose darkness over light as I sort through life’s challenges. Empower me to seek this abundant gift for living each day. In the name of Jesus, I pray, amen.
