Truth as Beauty

Truth as Beauty

Your statutes are always righteous; give me understanding that I may live.

Psalm 119:144

The darkness that arrives at night hides the beauty of the surrounding landscape, the power of the hawk’s flight, the intricacies of a spider’s web, and the delicate green moss growing on the North side of the Oak tree. When I turn out the lights inside my home, darkness also hides my favorite birthday photo—six smiling grandgirls embracing me. All this beauty remains hidden until the morning light again reveals its presence.

Charles Spurgeon wrote of something far more beautiful than anything God created or I could capture in a photo—Truth. He wrote, “God’s truth is as beauty in the dark when biblical truth is unseen by those whose hearts cannot comprehend it.”

Jesus’ expresses a similar concept when He explains why he speaks in parables to the crowd (See Matthew 13:13-15). “Though seeing, they do not see…. They have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes….”

To His disciples, Jesus adds, “But blessed are your eyes because they see!” Just as the disciples grew in their understanding during their time with Jesus, so have I. With thankfulness, I rejoice that the Holy Spirit has provided light for my eyes to see the beauty of His Word and the beauty of its truths for living my life in a way that honors Him.

Father, thank you for opening my eyes to see the beauty of all You offer me through Your Word—mentors, Christian friends, and family. Prompt me when I close my eyes to what You are showing me. Empower me to open my eyes to see Your beauty. In the name of Your beautiful Son, Jesus, I pray, amen.
