Praying for Perception: Uncovering Our Hidden Sins Day by Day
Who perceives his unintentional sins? Cleanse me from my hidden faults. Moreover, keep your servant from willful sins; do not let them rule me. Then I will be blameless and cleansed from blatant rebellion.
Psalm 19:12-13 CSB
What trips us up more: the sins we choose, or the ones that seem to choose us in the heat of the moment? Personally, I find myself wrestling with both. There are times I knowingly step off God's path, but far too often, those spontaneous reactions occur without any premeditation on my part.
Each year, the Lord graciously leads me to specific rhythms to enrich my daily time with Him. This might be a focused Scripture passage (or several), a particular prayer to embrace, or an inspiring quote to reflect upon. These directives often emerge at the start of the year, but can also appear throughout. They serve as intentional guides, drawing my attention to areas where God desires my growth.
For 2025, one of these key practices is the daily, prayerful engagement with Psalm 19:12-13, alongside my time in the Word and prayer. Isn't our heart's cry to have God illuminate the areas where we fall short? This deliberate act cultivates a heightened awareness of our weaknesses, those "hidden faults" the Psalmist identifies, prompting repentance and a seeking of forgiveness.
I've also incorporated verse 14 into this daily plea: "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, LORD, my rock and my Redeemer." As the Lord reveals aspects within me that are not pleasing to Him, I can immediately ask for His strength to walk in a way that honors Him throughout my day.
Lord, the more I come to know You and Your Truth, the more acutely I feel the conviction of my sin. I pray fervently: do not allow me to become comfortable in my failings. Thank You for Your steadfast love that holds me even when I stumble.
