Strengthening Exercise: Praising God in Difficulties
...My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
2 Corinthians 12:9
I was recently asked the question, “What do you delight in?” Numerous things came to mind, but I can tell you what never crossed my mind—my weaknesses and my difficulties.
The apostle Paul, having endured countless trials, said something striking: That is why for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong (2 Corinthians 12:10).
To understand Paul’s mindset, we must focus on his words for Christ’s sake. Paul had such an exalted view of Jesus that whatever glorified Jesus became a delight to Paul, even if it meant his own pain and suffering. Exalting Christ Jesus became the purpose of every experience Paul faced.
This causes me to pause and reflect: Is Jesus Christ exalted above all things in my life? What am I willing to endure that Jesus might be glorified?
Paul reminded the Corinthians, But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. He also said, Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord (2 Corinthians 4:7, 10:17). When Paul experienced weakness, he didn’t despair. He seized the opportunity to praise God for His perfect power.
Paul teaches us a powerful lesson: In every life experience—especially the difficult ones—look for God’s revelation of His character. Then, praise Him for what He shows you.
· When you experience God’s power in your weakness—praise Him as your strength.
· When God provides in your time of need—praise Him as your provider.
· When He emboldens you to speak the truth—praise Him for His faithfulness.
· When He makes known His will to you—praise Him as your guide.
Seize every opportunity to praise the Lord!
Lord, you alone deserve to be exalted. As you reveal your perfect character to us, help us respond quickly with praise of you.
