Aroma of a Good Friend
Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice.
Proverbs 27:9
During the spring semester my girls look forward to the school dances. The excitement of having their friends over early to get ready for the big event consumes the day.
Hearing the chatter and the giggles as they curl their hair or touch up their make-up can go on for hours. Honestly, I love it! I love hearing them make these sweet memories.
After the girls go and the house becomes quiet, all that remains is the smells of perfume in the air. These aromas are the evidence of a joyful heart and the “pleasantness of a friend.”
The Bible compares a pleasant aroma to a friend’s wise counsel. A friend who invests in your spiritual well-being is someone you desire to be around or strive to be like. These people encourage you, give you sound advice, or set you straight when you are walking away from godly truth. To have friends invest in you is a sweet aroma.
In the poem Simple Love, my daughter described it this way:
A way I see
The Lord’s love vividly
My friends
People unrelated to me
Unobligated to speak to me
Their love is different
Far beyond mandatory
People my age
Surrendering time for me
Supporting me freely
These can be called simple
Often hold more weight
Than acts of parents
Parents are called to care
Friendship is a choice.
